5 ways to… get a change mindset

Cultivating a change mindset

‘Change is the only constant in life’ – as true today as it was in the time of Greek philosopher Heraclitus. But rather than being accustomed to it, we’re hard-wired to find change difficult. It doesn’t have to be that way. By embracing the possibilities in uncertainty, we can use it to get stronger. It all comes down to our mindset. Here are 5 simple tips to help you get started.

  1. Recognize that change itself isn’t hard. It’s the perceived threat to our status or stability, and the ensuing emotional response, that can become tricky. Realizing the distinction is the first step towards building a ‘change agile’ mindset.
  2. Be flexible, not robust. The idea isn’t to bounce back as you were before, but to evolve and improve. Remind yourself that whatever happens, you’ll make it through to the other side – even if you don’t know what that looks like yet. Perfectionism is the enemy of resilience: accepting there will be a level chaos reduces your anxiety around it.
  3. Use your network. Knowing that you’ll get through it together buffers you from the negative impact of change. But uncertainty can threaten relationships. Don’t let it. Figure out who will provide practical and emotional support, and look outside your usual network for opportunities to connect in the ‘new world’.
  4. Take back control. Feeling like you have no control can spiral into learned helplessness and despair. Take action by listing what aspects of the situation you have influence over. Balance out a loss of autonomy in one area by focusing your energy on the things you can change – you’ll immediately feel more in control.
  5. Bring a change mindset to the team. Organizations thrive when their employees embrace uncertainty and adapt quickly.
