Most people feel strongly about diversity and inclusion, but not for the same reasons. On one side, D&I hasn’t gone far enough to remedy the low representation of women in senior roles, high turnover of ethnic minority employees and pervading misogyny, homophobia, and other prejudices. On the other side, it’s gone too far creating a world where political correctness is valued over performance. Backlash is everywhere. Sometimes it comes into the open – in the form of negative employee survey comments– but mostly it is kept to water cooler conversations with like-minded people, or behind private emails.
The result of well-intended D&I initiatives is, paradoxically, an increasingly polarized, unhealthy and unproductive workforce.
