When workload is high, demands still need to be met, and help seems like it’s not on the way, how do you support your team’s wellbeing?
Countless organisations offer up “solutions” to treat the problem instead of digging deeper to find a cure. That’s where the five drivers come in.
We’ve cycled through years of research to identify the five drivers of wellbeing: Certainty, competence, autonomy, belonging, and purpose.
When these five factors are threatened, people experience illbeing and begin to fall into crisis. But when they’re supported and built into the way of work, they can help employees flourish.
To really get on the right path toward building health, happy teams, certainty and competence are the bedrock for enhancing wellbeing. Getting these right should be every organization’s first priority.
When it comes to workplace wellbeing, at minimum, people need to know what they’re doing and how to do it well. Competence is about having what it takes to accomplish tasks effectively now, as well as opportunities to learn more.
Some 54% of employees report feeling like they don’t have the skills they need to do their work. With the wrong mindset, this can be paralyzing.
But moving from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset enables us to see mistakes as an opportunity to learn and improve, versus feeling like a failure and giving up.
To improve employees’ sense of competence, employers can focus on positive reinforcement, praising good work, as well as offering multiple opportunities to gain new skills and, critically, framing mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow in competence.
Work demands can have a negative effect on our wellbeing—but they don’t have to. Scientists here at MindGym have crafted our Wellworking solution to unlock new ways to drive performance while protecting and promoting wellbeing without having to compromise on either.
